God's Power Over Nature

Introduction

From microbes in the ground to stars in the galaxy God governs. He has absolute power and control over it. The atheistic world (and by extension the secular society) projects the idea that the world is a random, free-course phenomenon. Implying, that all we see (that can sometimes be explained by physical laws) are the product of randomness, and came into existence by an unknown force/cause.
They have tried to explain the existence of God and His Power over natural phenomena. There is no such thing as:

Mother nature
Forces of nature
Randomness

There is a need among Christians to conform their view of the world to the Word of God. Many Christians see nature as a closed system outside the control of God. They make provision for God to intervene periodically but in general, they see nature as running on its own.

Our Sovereign God

There is nothing that escapes the power of God.

– He commands and the rains fall.
– He calls and the winds obey Him.
– The Bible always attributes the workings of nature as the work of God.
– Not once does the Bible attribute even something as common as rain to any power other
than God Himself.
– A biblical worldview does not have separate categories for what God does and what
“naturally” occurs in the world.
– Indeed, the Bible tells us that it is God who holds all things together (Colossians ).
– He holds subatomic particles together. He causes rain and drought.

His Sovereignty All Through Times

He created and controls the seasons (Genesis 1:14; Psalms 74:16-17; 104:19).
He raises the sun every morning (Psalm 104:19).
He created, named, and leads the stars (Psalm 147:4; Job 38:32-33).
He causes the wind to blow (Exodus 14:21; Job 28:25-27; Psalm 78:26; Jonah 1:4; Matthew 8:26-27;
Mark 4:39-41; Luke 8:24-25; James 5:17-18).
He created and controls the water cycle (Job 26:8-9; Job 5:10; Psalm 135:7; 147:8; Matthew 5:45;
Acts 14:17; Joel 2:23).
He sustains the earth (Job 5:10; Psalm 135:6).
He sends the morning dew (Proverbs 3:19-20).
He causes lunar eclipses (Job 26:8-9;
He provides for the growth of grass and crops (Psalm 147:8;
He sends lightning (Job 37:1-18; Job 1:16).
He sends loud thunderstorms, which I love (Jeremiah 10:13; 1 Samuel 12:17-18).
He sends hail and snow, ice and frost (Psalm 148:8; Job 38:22-30).

His Sovereign Power Demonstrated Through His Incarnate
Son

1. Power Over the storm – Mk 4:39
– Mr 4:37 And there arose a great storm of wind, and the waves beat into the ship, so that it was now
full.
– Mr 4:39 And he arose, and rebuked the wind, and said unto the sea, Peace, be still. And the wind
ceased, and there was a great calm.

2. Power Over the sea- Mark 4:39; Matt. 8:23-27; Mark 4:35-39; Luke 8:22-25
a. Mt 8:23 ¶ And when he was entered into a ship, his disciples followed him.
b. Mt 8:24 And, behold, there arose a great tempest in the sea, insomuch that the ship was covered
with the waves: but he was asleep.
c. Mt 8:25 And his disciples came to him, and awoke him, saying, Lord, save us: we perish.
d. Mt 8:26 And he saith unto them, Why are ye fearful, O ye of little faith? Then he arose, and rebuked
the winds and the sea; and there was a great calm.
e. Mt 8:27 But the men marvelled, saying, What manner of man is this, that even the winds and the sea
obey him!

3. He Walked on the sea- Math 14:25
a. Mt 14:23 And when he had sent the multitudes away, he went up into a mountain apart to pray: and
when the evening was come, he was there alone.
b. Mt 14:25 And in the fourth watch of the night Jesus went unto them, walking on the sea.

Conclusion

– We see the finger of God over everything, every second, controlling everything.
– The stars, weather, disasters, disease, disability, death – Ps 147:15; Job 37
– The Bible is clear about the sovereignty of God over the natural world
– God sees everything that is about to happen and can command them to stop (if it didn’t
stop, it is cos He didn’t ask them to).
